Gosford Park

Alur Cerita

In the early 1930s, the wealthy and esteemed guests of Gosford Park, a grand English estate, arrive for a weekend retreat. Among them are the upper echelons of society, including Lady Toppingdale (Kristin Scott Thomas), a snobbish aristocrat; Ivor Novello (Jeremy Northam), a charming but unfaithful movie star; and Morris Weissman (Michael Gambon), a Jewish businessman and outsider. As the weekend unfolds, tensions arise between the guests and the estate's staff, including the stern housekeeper Mrs. Croft (Helen Mirren) and the ambitious young housemaid Elsie (Sophie Thompson). The divide is further complicated by the presence of American socialite Sylvia (Clare Higgins), who seeks to ingratiate herself with the British aristocracy. When one of the guests, William McCordle (Tom Wilkinson), is found dead in his bedchamber, the weekend's relaxation turns to investigation. As Detective Thompson (Charles Dance) begins to question the guests and staff, each one becomes a suspect. The investigation reveals a web of secrets, affairs, and betrayals that have been simmering beneath the surface. Through the lens of the murder mystery, Gosford Park offers a wry commentary on class, social status, and the British upper crust during the early 20th century. With its witty dialogue, clever plot twists, and strong ensemble cast, the film is a loving tribute to the classic whodunit genre, as well as a nuanced exploration of the complexities of human relationships. As the investigation unfolds, Gosford Park ultimately becomes a poignant examination of the consequences of playing with fire in the world of high society.
